A sound bowl, also known as a singing bowl or Tibetan bowl, is a type of musical instrument that falls under the category of standing bells. These bowls are characterized by their inverted bell shape and are typically made of metal, with a composition that may include various metals such as copper, tin, zinc, iron, silver, or gold.

Key features of sound bowls include:

1. **Shape:** The bowls have a wide, open rim and a rounded or semi-spherical body. The shape is often reminiscent of a rounded goblet or a bell turned upside down.

2. **Metal Composition:** Traditional sound bowls are made using a blend of different metals, each contributing to the bowl's unique sound. The specific combination of metals, as well as the crafting process, influences the pitch, tone, and resonance of the bowl.

3. **Sound Production:** To produce sound from a singing bowl, a mallet (or striker) is typically used. The practitioner strikes or rubs the outer rim of the bowl with the mallet, creating vibrations that produce a rich, resonant sound.

4. **Vibrational Healing:** Sound bowls are often used in practices such as sound healing or meditation. The vibrations and harmonics produced by the bowls are believed to have therapeutic effects, promoting relaxation, balance, and healing.

5. **Cultural Origins:** While often associated with Tibet, sound bowls have cultural roots in various Asian countries, including Nepal, India, Bhutan, and Mongolia. They have been used for centuries in religious and spiritual practices, as well as for ceremonial and meditative purposes.

6. **Modern Use:** In addition to traditional practices, sound bowls have gained popularity in contemporary settings, including yoga studios, meditation centers, and wellness spaces. Many people use them for relaxation, stress reduction, and as a tool for mindfulness and meditation.

It's important to note that the terminology may vary; some people refer to these instruments as singing bowls, while others use terms like Tibetan bowls or Himalayan bowls. The name "singing bowl" reflects the sustained, singing-like quality of the sound produced when the rim is rubbed.

When using a sound bowl, individuals often find the experience meditative and soothing. The vibrations are thought to resonate not only audibly but also at a vibrational level, influencing the energy and balance within the body. While there is anecdotal evidence supporting the therapeutic benefits of sound bowls, scientific research on their specific health effects is still an area of exploration.
